MY LIFE + KIDS: Maya Turns 5

February has been full of birthday fun, Maya turned 5! That's big stuff in the kiddie world, because it means she's ready for kindergarten and working towards new big kid milestones... Yikes!

We started Maya's birthday with a balloon surprise outside her bedroom door and waiting downstairs was a pair of roller skates as per her request. Aren't those neat? It's great, because she truly loves them. And remember our trip to Great Wolf Lodge? We drove up on her birthday morning and had a blast there.

Then this past weekend we celebrated some more with a small family party The decor was simple. Sometimes all you need are a few party hats and noisemakers to dress things up and a house filled with good conversation + laughter.

Scott's mom created three new games like High 5 Bingo using heart candies + a 'how well do you know Maya' game where I only guessed 5 out of 10 questions correctly...uh oh. That game ended in a tie that then ended in a feisty rock, paper, scissors match with Scott and Aunt Mickey.  Love that everyone has such an awesome sense of humor! Check out that board game too. The sisters (Scott's aunts) made that for my mother-in-law. It's really fun and such a great gift idea.

For Maya's birthday cake and desserts, I tested my baking skills and for the first time baked outside the box (cake wise).  I tried these two recipes found on Annie's Eats and while they were yummy, they may have been a little too heavy for a kid party...Triple Chocolate Cupcakes + Vanilla Buttercream Cake (adapted from this recipe)
